RiceString Noodle Shack is a family-run restaurant in Cerritos, California, serving Cambodian street food and comfort food.[1] It opened in 2017 as the sister restaurant of Phnom Penh Noodle Shack in Long Beach, which the Tan family has run since 1985.[2][3]

History

The family opened RiceString in 2017 in a ready-to-run restaurant space at the corner of South Street and Pioneer. Compared with the Long Beach restaurant, it has more parking, serves dinner, and adds rice dishes, appetizers, boba drinks and beer to the menu.[2] Its menu also includes wine.[4]

Food

The kitchen serves noodle soups, dry noodles, savory rice porridge, stir-fried noodles and fried breads.[4] Noodles come in five kinds: small or big rice noodles, small or big egg noodles, and a mix of egg and rice noodles. The house special, the #1 Phnom Penh noodles, comes with sliced pork, ground pork, stomach, liver and shrimp, and can be ordered dry with large egg noodles. Dine-in orders of dry noodles come with a free bowl of pork bone soup while it lasts.[5] Other bowls include a beef stew of chunks, tripe and tendon cooked for hours in tomato broth, and the chluy bowl of beef intestine, quail eggs and pork rinds.[5]

Among the stir-fries are student noodles and loat cha, made with teardrop-shaped pin rice noodles, bean sprouts, green onions, chives, fried garlic, peanuts and egg.[5] The porridge list runs from a pork house special with three-layer pork, stomach, spleen, liver and blood to a plain porridge with no meat.[5] Fried breads include cha quai bread sticks, nom hing round bread and nom sa-kieu meat bread.[6]

The rice plates include beef sticks of chuck roast marinated in lemongrass and grilled, beef loc lac with a lime dipping sauce, Hainan chicken and Cambodian fried rice with Chinese sausage and Chinese broccoli.[5][1] Desserts include battered, fried Cambodian bananas and shaved ice with grass jelly, longan, jackfruit, palm seed, red bean and condensed milk. The drinks list has the Cambo Khrack iced coffee, with hints of chicory, chocolate and coconut, Cambodian egg soda, and a long list of milk teas and fruit teas.[5]
