Phnom Penh Noodle Shack is a family-owned Cambodian noodle restaurant on Cherry Avenue in Long Beach, California, open since 1985.[1][2] It is known for kuy teav, the Cambodian noodle soup made with a pork-and-beef-bone broth.[1]

History

Bun Heu Tan and Maly B. Tan came to Long Beach after escaping the Khmer Rouge. When a small Vietnamese restaurant they loved closed, they bought its 500-square-foot space and opened Phnom Penh Noodle Shack there in 1985.[2][3][1] As of 2026 it was run by their children, who grew up working there.[1] Since 1985 it has been a place of connection and comfort for the Cambodian community, and a place to share its culture.[2]

Food

The house special comes with rice noodles, egg noodles or both, topped with pork and shrimp, herbs, bean sprouts, fried garlic and lime. It can be ordered "wet" or "dry," with the broth on the side.[1] On the menu it carries sliced and ground pork, pork stomach, liver and shrimp.[4] Other bowls include Mo's Special Noodles with pork and beef balls; kho ko, a slow-cooked tomato-broth stew of beef, tripe and tendon; and me-ka-tang, wide rice noodles with Chinese broccoli, carrots and egg.[4][1] Noodle salads such as me-ka-la and ba-bong come with the house garlic fish sauce.[4]

The kitchen also makes rice porridge, knom sakieu (meat bread filled with ground pork, black pepper, caramelized onions and jicama) and cha quai, a fried dough stick for dipping into soup.[4][1] Drinks include coffee with condensed milk and Thai iced tea.[4] In 2026 the restaurant served a limited Battambong BBQ collaboration of smoked brisket over wide egg noodles during Long Beach Food Scene Week.[1]

Visiting

It offers takeout and delivery.[5][6] Its sister restaurant is RiceString Noodle Shack.[5]
