New Kamara Restaurant
New Kamara Restaurant is a Chinese-Cambodian restaurant at 709 North Hill Street in the Chinatown neighborhood of Los Angeles.[1][2] In 2023 it was one of just two Cambodian restaurants in Chinatown, with Golden Lake Eatery.[3] Its menu mixes Khmer and Chinese dishes.[1][4]
Community
Chinatown has a small but concentrated Cambodian community, by some estimates about 600 people. Many of them are ethnically Chinese Cambodians, who came to Los Angeles in large numbers in the 1980s.[3] Within metropolitan Los Angeles, the largest Cambodian population, about 20,000 people by most estimates, lives in Long Beach.[3]
Food
The restaurant's own menu leans on fresh ingredients and bold spices, with stir-fries and aromatic soups.[2] Its House Combination noodle soup holds pork balls, boiled pork, ground pork, shrimp and slices of kidney.[5]
The menu runs through rice noodle and egg noodle soups, among them combination, seafood, beef, beef stew, pig intestine and fish flat noodle soups. There are porridges with pork blood, fish or seafood, fried noodles and chow mein, and fried rice, including Yang Chow fried rice and shrimp fried rice with XO sauce.[4] Plates over rice include beef lok lak, served on plain or fried rice, lemongrass beef, lemongrass frog, lemongrass chicken, ginger chicken, pork chop, fried pig intestine and salt-and-pepper shrimp.[4]
Customers writing on the restaurant's website name the leek cakes and stir-fried radish cake as favorites, and one calls the food very traditional Khmer cooking.[2]
Visiting
The restaurant has vegetarian options and free parking.[2]
