Golden Lake Eatery is a restaurant in a busy Chinatown plaza in Los Angeles, California. It opened in October 2014 serving home-style Cambodian food.[1][2] Its cooking carries Chiu Chow and Vietnamese influences.[2]

History

The restaurant took over a former Vietnamese eatery in October 2014.[1] Johnny Yee opened it to serve the roughly 600 Cambodian residents of Chinatown. It has been called the first Cambodian restaurant in the city of Los Angeles, a sign of how few Cambodian restaurants the area had. In November 2014 the Los Angeles Times named a mother and daughter from Cambodia as the team behind the restaurant.[2] It is one of the few Cambodian restaurants in the region outside Long Beach.[1]

Food

The two dishes that defined the restaurant in 2014 were beef lok lak and a dry combination noodle dish with soup on the side.[2] The lok lak is quickly seared, tender beef with a dipping sauce of lemon juice, fish sauce and a great deal of pepper, served with rice, and is close to the Vietnamese shaking beef.[2][1] The noodles, called kuy teav, are rice noodles seasoned with shallots, thinly sliced meat and fish, and they come with a rich beef knuckle soup. The dish is the Cambodian counterpart of the Vietnamese hu tieu.[2] A taro cake of glutinous rice, shaped into a disc and filled with taro and pork, is served as a starter.[1]

Other dishes have included a chive rice cake (banh he hap), Teochew-style dry rice noodles (hu tieu trieu chau kho) and a stir-fried seafood noodle dish with fish cakes, fish balls, chives and bean sprouts (banh loc xao do bien).[3] Fresh coconut juice is the drink, and the menu has photographs of the dishes. The staff showed diners how to eat the noodles and which sauces to use.[2]
