Cambodian Education Forum
The Cambodian Education Forum (CEF) is an online platform, founded in 2020, that publishes education research and writing, mainly by Cambodians.[1][2] Its focus is education and English Language Teaching in Cambodia, and it gives researchers, educators, teachers and students a place to share their views and findings.[1] It started and runs the Cambodian Journal of Educational Research, and it pays special attention to new and emerging writers.[1][2]
History
Three Cambodian scholars, Kimkong Heng, Sopheap Kaing and Vutha Ros, co-founded the forum on July 1, 2020, to promote research and publication in education in Cambodia.[1][2] In August 2020 it ran on WordPress at cambodianeducationforum.wordpress.com, and the three founders also served as its editors, with Kimkong Heng doing the final edit on each piece. By August 2020 it had received 12 articles and published seven, mostly short opinion and research articles of about 1,000 words. The forum faced financial constraints, and the founders were writing a proposal to raise funds to upgrade the website.[2]
In December 2020 the forum published its first edited book, English language teaching, education, and online learning in Cambodia during COVID-19: Perspectives from practitioners and researchers. The team began planning a journal that same month.[3] The first issue of the Cambodian Journal of Educational Research came out in September 2021, with 11 articles.[3]
By July 2022 the forum had published 63 articles, four edited books and two issues of the journal. Its editorial team had grown to 62 people, and almost 50 people had given money toward its operations and website. The Asia Foundation's Ponlok Chomnes program paid for printing the first two issues of the journal. The forum said its work was limited by time and by heavy administrative and editorial workloads.[4]
Publishing
Submissions to the forum are blind peer-reviewed by two reviewers, or by one reviewer and an editor. Writers whose drafts are not ready are asked to revise and resubmit, sometimes twice, and accepted pieces are edited before they appear. The forum gives priority to Cambodian writers, though anyone may publish.[2] Its articles have covered subjects such as classroom management, teaching English speaking skills to young learners, research practice in Cambodia and the quality of Cambodian higher education.[5]
The Cambodian Journal of Educational Research is peer-reviewed and publishes English-language work in education and English Language Teaching. It comes out twice a year, in June and December, and accepts submissions all year. The journal has moved from the forum's website to its own Open Journal Systems site, and submissions now go through that site rather than by email.[1][6]
Training and seminars
The forum runs a six-month internship in academic writing, mainly for university students and recent graduates, to help them publish research articles or book chapters. By July 2022 it had run three groups of interns: 30 in the first two and 20 in the third.[4] It began the CEF Research Seminar Series online on July 16, 2022, as a place to share research findings.[4]
Leadership (2022)
Sopheap Kaing, one of the co-founders, was managing editor in 2022.[4] Koemhong Sol, an emerging Cambodian scholar, later joined the forum.[1]
