Music release

Whiskey Cambodia is the third album by the Khmer pop and rock band The Cambodian Space Project, released by Metal Postcard Records in 2014.[1][2] Its ten songs run 40 minutes and draw on the music of both Detroit and Cambodia.[3][2]

About the release

The band recorded the album with the backing of the Motown musician Dennis Coffey. The band's founder, Julien Poulsen, produced it.[2] The songs mix 1960s influences, Khmer rock, Cambodian pop and Motown.[2] Apple Music files it under alternative.[3]

Metal Postcard Records is an independent label based in Jakarta, Indonesia.[1] Sources give several dates for the release. The label's page dates it to May 1, 2014. The label said it would reach online digital and record stores in May 2014, and CD preorders placed in February were to ship on March 1, 2014.[1] On July 7, 2014, Louder Than War, which spelled the title Whisky Cambodia, streamed the album ahead of its official release a week later.[2] Apple Music lists a 2015 release date.[3] The album came out on CD with a digital album.[1]

The title song

The band's lead singer, Srey Thy, wrote the title song about the day The Cambodian Space Project came to her village. In the song, the village prepares a feast for the barang, the foreigners who are visiting. The visitors dance, make music and drink Cambodian whiskey.[4][2] Srey Thy says she wrote it "from head," out of what she saw, rather than from the heart.[4]
