Wat
Wat Khmer Santipheap
Wat Khmer Santipheap is a Cambodian Theravada Buddhist temple on Burton Road in Paralowie, in the Adelaide area of South Australia.[1][2] It calls itself a small Khmer Theravada Buddhist community, and it is affiliated with the Cambodian Association of South Australia.[2][3]
Religious life
The temple holds traditional Buddhist ceremonies, meditation, sermons and teaching in Cambodian Buddhism.[1] Its community keeps the Buddhist year with Meagha Boja, Vishakha Boja, Cambodian New Year, the ceremonies of Vassa (the rains retreat), Bon Kan Ben and Pchum Ben, which it marks as ancestor days, Bon Ak Ambuk and the Kathina ceremony. It also celebrates the international New Year.[2][4] Directory listings of 2012 and 2017 give Venerable Sorng Nou as abbot and teacher and Mr. Savonn Ly as president.[4][2]
Community
Alongside worship, the temple runs Khmer language classes, community gatherings and cultural events, and offers community support. It works to preserve Cambodian heritage and to share Cambodian traditions, art and history with the wider Australian community. It welcomes both the Cambodian community and people interested in its culture and faith.[1] The temple's association is the Wat Khmer Santipheap Association of South Australia.[2]
