Music release
The Deepest Lake
The Deepest Lake is the fifth album of new songs by the band Dengue Fever, released in 2015 and sung in English and Khmer.[1][2]
About the release
The ten songs run to 47 minutes. They draw on psychedelic and garage rock, spy-film soundtracks, surf guitar, Cambodian pop, African percussion and soul, with touches of hip-hop and jazz interludes.[2][3] The vocals move between English and Khmer, led by the Cambodian-born singer Chhom Nimol.[2]
The band produced the album itself, building the songs out of demos recorded in its home studio and leaving room for long jams.[2] It followed the founding of the band's own label, Tuk Tuk Records, in 2013, which gave the band more control over its music and releases.[1] The record came out in the United States and Canada on January 27, 2015, and elsewhere on February 2.[1] Billboard ranked it the number-one world music album for the week of February 14 to 21, 2015.[3]
Background
Dengue Fever formed in 2002 and released its self-titled first album the following year.[1] The band began by playing Khmer-language versions of older Cambodian songs before writing its own.[4] A 2007 documentary followed the band on tour in Cambodia, Chhom Nimol's homeland.[4]
Track list
The songs include "Tokay," "No Sudden Moves," "Rom Say Sok," "Ghost Voice" and "Deepest Lake on the Planet." The album closes with "Taxi Dancer" and "Golden Flute."[5]
