Tan's Donut is a doughnut shop and Cambodian restaurant at Guerneville and Fulton roads in Santa Rosa, California, owned by Sophai and Van Chey.[1] Display cases hold pastries baked each day, and the kitchen serves a menu of Cambodian classics alongside Vietnamese and Thai dishes.[1][2]

History

The Cheys bought the shop from the Tan family in 2000. The Tan family kept two other Tan's locations in eastern Santa Rosa.[1] The Cheys first added Vietnamese and Thai dishes such as pho, vermicelli bowls and pad Thai, and later a few Cambodian dishes that spread mostly by word of mouth.[1] After closing one winter to remodel the dining room, the restaurant reopened in January with a larger menu of Cambodian classics.[1]

Sophai Chey learned Cambodian cooking by watching her mother run a roadside stand in Phnom Penh. She cooks by taste rather than from fixed recipes, and she has said her food stands apart from nearby menus that are mostly Vietnamese, Thai or Chinese.[1]

Food

The doughnuts include apple fritters, buttermilk bars, chocolate eclairs, cake doughnuts and crunch-topped treats; the buttermilk doughnuts are denser than the glazed ones.[1][3]

On the Cambodian side, somlor machu kreung is a sweet-and-sour soup with beef tendon, lemongrass and fermented anchovy, and cha kreung satch moan is a lemongrass chicken stir-fry. A Cambodian curry is flavored with pork blood, chile paste and bamboo and served with vegetables, rice vermicelli and tofu, chicken or shrimp.[1] A beef stew of tendon, flank, meatballs, carrots, onions, star anise, red chile and palm sugar comes with rice, vermicelli or bread fresh from Tan's oven.[1] Lok lak is a platter of sliced beef marinated in soy sauce, oyster sauce, tomato sauce, sugar, fish sauce, black pepper and garlic, served over tomatoes, cucumber, red onion and lettuce with a lime and pepper dipping sauce made with fermented fish paste.[1]

As of 2026 the menu also listed nom pang sach sandwiches of barbecue beef, barbecue pork or baked lemongrass chicken; kuythiew noodle soups; vermicelli salad bowls; Cambodian-style egg rolls; and kuythiew cha, a Cambodian-style pad Thai.[4][5]

Visiting

The shop's street address is 2550 Guerneville Road, Suite E. As of 2025 Tan's Donut also had a shop at 1074 Fourth Street in Santa Rosa, and the Cambodian menu was served at the Guerneville Road location.[2][3]
