Sunny Restaurant Asian Cuisine is a small Cambodian American family restaurant on Albany Street in Utica, New York, open since 2008.[1][2] Its menu brings together Cambodian, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese dishes.[3] It has received a Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice award.[4]

History

The Soeung family saved for ten years, with help from friends, to open the restaurant, the first for its owner, Sanh Soeung. By November 2008 it had been open six months and was growing by word of mouth. Sojattra Soeung cooked and also worked as waitress and manager.[2] Sanh Soeung and Sarvong Soeung are the restaurant's chefs; Sarvong has worked there since the grand opening.[1] The Intentionalist directory lists the restaurant as opened by the Chen family in 2008.[5]

Food

The Cambodian side of the menu includes Cambodian farmer soup, made with pickled lotus root, lime juice and herbs in a rich broth; bor bor, a rice soup with pork, chicken or shrimp; and Phnom Penh noodle soup in chicken broth with shrimp, pork and sliced pork meatballs.[6] There are also nime chow, fresh spring rolls with lettuce, bean sprouts, mint and rice noodles; nime chien, pork egg rolls with taro and rice noodles; and beef loc lac, cubed beef stir-fried in oyster sauce over lettuce, tomatoes and onions, with a salt, pepper and lime sauce.[6]

In 2008 Pad Thai, stir-fried noodles with bean sprouts, cabbage, scallions, ground peanuts and peanut sauce, was one of its most popular dishes.[2] The wider menu includes Cantonese noodles, spring rolls, crab rangoon, Bangkok crispy noodles, drunken noodles, General Tso's chicken, pho, tom yum soup, papaya salad and a seafood hot pot.[3][6]

Visiting

The restaurant serves lunch and dinner, with dine-in, takeout and catering for small gatherings and special events.[1][3][7]
