Nom Pang
Nom Pang is a family-run Cambodian sandwich cafe in the northwest valley of Las Vegas, Nevada.[1][2] Its full name is Nom Pang Sandwiches and More, and the family spells it Nöm Pang. The owners call it a "family-style cafe" rather than a restaurant.[3] Local reviewers have called it the first restaurant in Las Vegas devoted to Cambodian food.[4][5]
History
The owners are first-generation Cambodian Americans from San Francisco. Their family fled the Khmer Rouge and settled in the city's Tenderloin District.[3] The kitchen is run by a brother and sister. The sister was born and raised in San Francisco, and her husband cooks the food.[4][5] Before Las Vegas she ran a Cambodian shop in the Central Valley of California for nearly nine years.[4][5] The family's own account gives eight years at a sandwich shop in Manteca, California.[3] They moved to Las Vegas because they felt the community there needed more Khmer representation. The owners call the business a tribute to the generation before them.[3]
Food
The menu centers on num pang, Cambodian baguette sandwiches.[1][2] Every one comes with mayonnaise, house sauce, cucumber, green onion, pickled carrots, cilantro, culantro and jalapeño.[6] The classic versions are pork, lemongrass beef and lemongrass chicken, built with pâté, pickled daikon, herbs, mayonnaise and barbecue sauce.[4][5] The Nöm Pang Special holds pâté, ham, headcheese, steamed pork, steamed pork belly and minced pork. Other fillings include pork belly, minced pork and egg, barbecue chicken, and Spam and egg.[6] The cafe also makes American sandwiches and paninis on ciabatta, wheat bread and croissants, with vegetarian choices.[6][3]
Rotating daily Cambodian specials include chicken curry, rice porridge, lemongrass chicken feet, pork rib dishes, papaya salad and fermented beans.[4][5] The rice porridge appears as babal and as babow.[4][2] The printed menu lists Cambodian chicken curry with bread, rice or noodles, fermented papaya salad with salted crab, spicy pork and stomach laap, and a lotus salad with pork belly and shrimp.[6] Rice plates come with a side of chrouk, and vermicelli noodle salad bowls come topped with lemongrass chicken, lemongrass shrimp or pork belly.[6][1] Drinks include smoothies, milk teas, slushes, boba and iced coffees, among them an Angkorian iced coffee.[6][1]
The family borrows a call of Cambodia's mobile food carts to describe its sandwiches: "ស្រស់ស្រស់ រសជាតិឈ្ងុយ…ឆ្ងាញ់!" (Fresh, Aromatic, & Delicious).[3]
