Folklorist and fieldworker who documented Cambodian community life in Lowell, Massachusetts for the Lowell Folklife Project.

Michael Edward Bell was a fieldworker on the Lowell Folklife Project, which documented community life in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1987 and 1988.[1] His interviews and photographs include members of Lowell's Cambodian community and a Cambodian New Year celebration at the Trairatanaram Temple.[2][3]

The Lowell Folklife Project

The Lowell Folklife Project collection is held by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. It includes oral histories, field recordings, photographs and other records of community life.[1] Bell was a member of the research team. He made black-and-white photographs, color slides and color photographs for the project, and he recorded interviews.[1][4]

On November 2, 1987, he interviewed Larry Flynn in Lowell.[4] On November 9, 1987, he interviewed Narong Hul in Lowell; the Library of Congress holds part 2 of that recording.[2][5]

On April 16, 1988, Bell photographed the Cambodian New Year celebration at the Trairatanaram Temple in Lowell, and a Laotian New Year celebration at the Lowell Girls Club. He shot the temple celebration on 35 mm black-and-white film. These documentary ethnographic photographs are credited to Bell and John Lueders-Booth.[3]
