Collection

The Greater Lowell Oral History Collection is a group of recorded interviews with residents of Lowell, Massachusetts, among them Cambodian immigrants.[1] It is published online with the Center for Lowell History and Lowell National Historical Park.[1]

History

Since the mid-1980s, the Center for Lowell History at the University of Massachusetts Lowell has co-sponsored oral history projects with members of Lowell's Southeast Asian community.[2] Interviews linked to the ethnographic study of Lowell were recorded by interviewers including Christoph Strobel and Michael Bell.[1][3]

Overview

Item records name the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the Center for Lowell History and Lowell National Historical Park. The interviews belong both to this collection and to the Southeast Asian Digital Archives.[1][3] Among the Cambodian narrators is Sambath Bo, a Cambodian immigrant and Lowell resident.[1] The collection also reaches beyond Lowell, with an interview with Raymond Bass of North Adams, Massachusetts.[4]

Material coverage

The published items include English-language interviews with Cambodian residents of Lowell, indexed under oral history, Lowell (Mass.) and the ethnographic study of the city.[1] The Center for Lowell History holds a wider group of Cambodian collections, set out in the library's Cambodian culture guide.[2]

Catalog and access

Items carry identifiers in the form CLHOH-Bo and are published on the Internet Archive. The Sambath Bo record also carries the archival identifier ark:/13960/t4qk3rf9p. No access restriction is recorded for the published items.[1][3] An oral history index is online, and some transcripts are digital on the Center for Lowell History's Southeast Asians and Ethnicity in Lowell pages. The whole physical collection can be seen and heard at the Center for Lowell History.[2]
