Golden Donut
Golden Donut is a Cambodian family donut shop in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego, California.[1] It has been in one family since 1983, when Chy Yam's brother bought it.[1]
History
From Yam's brother the shop passed to her sister, then to a younger sister, and then to Yam, who left college to take over the family business. By January 2010 she had owned it for 12 years and served a steady group of older regulars.[1] That year Yam said she would be the last in her family to run the shop, because her children would not make donuts. "The line stops here," she said.[1] She also spoke of why so many Cambodian families went into the trade: "We did this because when we came, we had to find something to do, and this is what we were able to learn from our friends and family."[1]
Food
The case holds classic glazed donuts, chocolate donuts and maple bars, served with freshly brewed coffee.[1] As of 2026 the menu also listed buttermilk and bacon donuts, bars and twists, bear claws, apple fritters, cinnamon rolls, muffins and donut holes by the dozen. Croissants come plain, filled, or with ham and cheese or sausage, and the drinks include Vietnamese iced coffee and Thai tea.[2] Another listing notes flavors such as banana turnover and matcha.[3]
Visiting
As of March 2026 the shop stood at 2360 University Avenue, in a small shopping plaza, and was open daily from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. for takeout.[2] Parking can be limited.[4]
