Music release
Full Monday Moon
Full Monday Moon is the debut solo album by the Oakland, California, singer-songwriter Bochan (Bochan Huy), released in 2012.[1][2] Its eleven songs, some in Khmer and some in English, tell of Cambodian American life.[2][1][3]
About the release
Bochan Huy wrote the album after the death of her father, a refugee and a musician who loved the Cambodian classics. He had been a musical mentor to her all her life.[1] She produced it for an independent label in a New York studio.[1][4] The album came out in January 2012; its Bandcamp page gives the month as December.[5][3] In February 2012, Huy was in Cambodia to promote it, on her first visit since 1999.[1]
The songs deal with migration, family separation, survival, memories of the motherland and the war, political criticism, hope and changing identity.[3] In "Believe," a father works day and night in a new land and longs for the days before the war.[3] Huy sings of struggles related to being Cambodian.[1] The single "Chnam Oun 16," featuring Raashan Ahmad, is her version of "I Am 16" ("Chnam Oun Dop Pram Mouy"). The original comes from Cambodian rock of the 1960s and 1970s, before the Khmer Rouge.[1][4][2] Huy calls her version "a melting pot of everything that I've absorbed: from living in Oakland, from being Cambodian, and from being American."[1]
Voice of America called the album a departure from much of Cambodia's own music scene, which favors cover versions of the classics over experimentation.[1] The Cambodian Alliance for the Arts wrote that it captures the Cambodian-American experience as a mix of varied cultural influences. In its words, the album creates something new that is loyal to its influences and different from them.[6][7] LPR credits the album with giving a new voice to contemporary Khmer identity.[2] It is sold on CD with a digital album, and as a streaming and download edition.[3]
