Demaz Tep Baker
Author of retellings of Cambodian folk tales and legends.
Demaz Tep Baker is a Cambodian-born author and cooking teacher whose book Khmer Legends (2009) retells Cambodian folk tales.[1] She came to the United States in 1976 and settled in the Washington, D.C., area, where she studied at night for her bachelor's and master's degrees.[1]
Khmer Legends
Baker set out to write down the stories of her childhood so they would be kept for future generations. She wrote them largely from memory and translated them from Cambodian.[1] The tales in Khmer Legends have been passed on orally from generation to generation. Animals in them have special powers, and belief in spirits is still alive.[1][2] One story, "Battambang," came to her from William Nathaniel Harben, who heard it in Battambang province in the early 1970s while serving as a foreign service officer in Cambodia.[1]
Outskirts Press published the book on June 20, 2009.[1] Booksellers also list Khmer Legends: Part II under her name, and a further listing includes Khmer Legends Part III under the name Dẻmaz Baker.[3][4]
Cooking
Baker teaches Cambodian cooking. She began her classes at the Arlington Adult Education Center, and by 2009 they had been held for three years in Annandale, Virginia. The classes grew into a Cambodian cooking club whose members meet, cook and share the food they make.[1] Her cookbook A Taste of Cambodian Cuisine was published by Xlibris in 2009.[3][5] She wrote it for young Cambodian Americans who want to learn the dishes they grew up eating and now miss.[5]
