Wat

Cambodian Buddhist Temple Of Calgary (វត្តសន្តិនារាម, Wat Santinaram) is a Khmer Theravada Buddhist temple on Ogden Road SE in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.[1][2] Its own publications from 2005 to 2008 call it the Khmer Buddhist Temple of Calgary and United Khmer Santinaram, at 7011 Ogden Road SE.[3][4][5]

Names

The Khmer-Canadian Buddhist Cultural Society is a registered Canadian charity based at the Khmer Buddhist temple at 7011 Ogden Road SE in Calgary, Alberta.[6] The temple has appeared under several names at that address, including United Khmer Santinaram, Watt Khmer Samakii Calgary, the Khmer-Canadian Buddhist Cultural Centre and the Cambodian Buddhist Temple of Calgary.[5][7][2][1]

The society published the Cambodian View newsletter and calendar from the temple address.[4][5]

History

The temple's 2005 calendar set out its year of observances. Khmer New Year was celebrated at Marlborough Hall on April 1 and 2, 2005, with a New Year prayer at the temple. A Vesak ceremony followed on May 22, and a large Pchum Ben ceremony was held in October.[3]

In late 2007 the monks and the Khmer Association committees of the temple invited members and the public to the 2008 Cambodian New Year Festival, Chol Chnam Tmey. The festival opened at the temple on Friday, April 18, 2008, at 6 p.m., with worship of the Triple Gem, the taking of the Five Precepts, Parita chanting and a Dhamma talk.[4] The 2008 calendar, issued under the name United Khmer Santinaram, marked evening chanting at the temple that day and the ceremony for entering the Buddhist rains retreat.[5]

Religious life

The temple follows the Theravada tradition. Its spiritual directors have been the Venerable Preah Krou Vipassana Keo Hong and the Venerable Vodano Sophan.[2]

Community

In 2007 the temple ran a Khmer language school with a Buddhist Saturday School and a Buddhist Sunday School. The school had been teaching for three years by then, and its fall 2007 semester ran from June to November.[4]

A 2017 City of Calgary directory listed the society as a source of Cambodian interpreters and translators, and listed the Cambodian-Canadian Association at the same address.[8] In 2026 the society co-hosts Calgary's Pchum Ben gathering, held that year at a community hall rather than at the temple.

Associations

Khmer-Canadian Buddhist Cultural Society (associated organization).[9] Organization details: Khmer-Canadian Buddhist Cultural Society.
The society’s own 2007 newsletter explicitly connects the named Calgary temple, the society and the Ogden Road address. The society’s broader interpretation, youth and cultural services remain documented on its separate organization page.
