Collection

The Cambodian Art, Dance and Culture Video Collection holds Phousita Huy's videotapes of Cambodian classical and folk dance from 1984 to 2003.[1] Huy is a master dance teacher, and the collection keeps the tapes as digital files at the Center for Lowell History, University of Massachusetts Lowell.[1][2]

Overview

The dancers include students of the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA) in Cambodia, the Angkor Dance Troupe in Lowell, Massachusetts, and the Dance Troupe of Cambodian American Heritage in Fort Washington, Maryland.[1] The collection mixes amateur and professional recordings.[2]

Material coverage

Besides dance, the videos show Angkor Wat, traditional Cambodian kite making and cultural performances at festivals, and they include interviews with master teachers.[1][2]

Several recordings show RUFA students at their final examinations in dance. One item shows students performing the classical dance drama Preah Chan Korup for their final exam in December 1991.[3] Other items record RUFA final exams on February 28, 1994, June 22, 1995, and June 24, 1997, and joint performances by RUFA and the Dance Troupe of Cambodian American Heritage from about 1995 to 1998.[2]

Other items show the Angkor Dance Troupe practicing Ramker & Manimakhala and Vorachhun around 2000, and performing at Hampshire College on January 28, 2002, in a recording credited to Jim Conlan. The collection also holds the Royal Ballet of Cambodia performing Preah Sothun in 2002 and 2003, and classical Cambodian music and dance performances from 2003.[2]

Catalog and access

The collection identifier is UML 6, and the collection has an online finding aid.[1][2] It is part of the Cambodian holdings of the Center for Lowell History. The collection is digital, and part of it can be viewed on the Southeast Asian Digital Archive (SEADA), where selected videos are embedded in the item descriptions.[1][4] Julia Huynh, Peter Pa and Chummeng Soun worked to bring the collection online.[2]
