Broadway Donuts
Broadway Donuts is a doughnut shop at the corner of 28th Street and Broadway in Sacramento, California, opened by a Cambodian refugee family in 1988.[1][2] It stands in the Curtis Park neighborhood and is known for its old-fashioneds, buttermilk bars and apple fritters.[3][1]
History
Telline So and Tong Yin came to California after surviving the Khmer Rouge. In 1988 they opened the shop in the former Baker Ben's Donuts, and it first traded as Baker Ben's.[1][4] The whole family worked there at one time or another.[4] Their son Josan Kim So took over in 2010, when his father retired, and later added a coffee menu and handmade trinkets made by his wife.[1][2]
The COVID-19 pandemic hurt the business, as did growing homelessness outside its front door. In 2024 a local artist painted a mural of two cranes on the shop's western wall.[1] In 2025 So had a stroke and decided to retire. In early December 2025 the family announced that the shop would close for good on December 12, and thanked Sacramento customers for welcoming them into their mornings, celebrations and routines.[4][1] "The community supported us through all these years," So said.[1]
Days before the planned closing, Don Thach, the shop's main baker for 36 years, offered to take over its management and keep it open under the same name.[2] On what was to have been the last day, So, Thach and their one employee went about their usual morning work.[2] Thach said he would keep baking part-time, hire another baker and leave the shop largely as it was, apart from some minor remodeling and new decoration.[2] "It's a pillar of the community," said Lee Washington, a longtime morning customer.[2]
Visiting
The shop has no indoor seating.[1] In February 2026 it was open seven days a week, from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays and from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends.[3] By May 2026 it was closed on Mondays, with the same hours on the other days.[5]
