Before the Fall is a 2015 war thriller by Ian White, set in Phnom Penh in 1975 as the Khmer Rouge close in on the city.[1] In it, a nightclub singer and two lovers try to escape before the capital falls.[2]

Synopsis

In 1975, Khmer Rouge guerrilla forces have Phnom Penh under siege. The last remaining United States troops are all that keep them from overrunning the city's defenses.[1] A nightclub singer, Liya, uses wit and deception as she tries to get out of the city with two lovers.[1][3] The film's tagline is "Three days in a city under siege - Who will survive?"[1]

Production and credits

Ian White wrote and directed the film.[1] It is a co-production of Australia, Cambodia and Singapore, made by Rock Production and Advent Media Group and filmed in Phnom Penh.[1][4] Kevin Kwok and Julien Poulson were the cinematographers.[5] Poulson also composed the music, a rock-and-roll soundtrack.[2] The dialogue is in Khmer, English and French, and the film runs 98 minutes.[4][3]

The cast includes Pauline Cammal as Liya, Ian Virgo as Sonny, Antonis Greco as Tony and Nicolas Berthery as Luc, with Kosal Khiev.[4][2]

Release and reception

The film was released on January 2, 2015.[1] Cambodia submitted it for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, and it was not nominated.[6][7] As an official selection of the 2016 Cambodia Town Film Festival, it had its Long Beach premiere at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2016.[2]
