Organization

Association Angkor Belgique is a nonprofit association in Namur, Belgium, founded in 1989 to help Khmer children through school by individual sponsorship.[1][2] In Dutch it is known as Vereniging Angkor België.[1] Belgium's company register has listed it as inactive since October 1, 2022, when its liquidation closed.[1]

History

The association was registered as a Belgian nonprofit, an association sans but lucratif (ASBL), on May 25, 1989.[1] Its registered office changed over the years. In 2016 it was listed at Sint-Michielswarande in Brussels, and by 2019 on Rue Julie Billiart in Namur.[3][4] Belgium's finance ministry listed it among the institutions recognized to receive gifts for the years 2015 through 2019.[3][4]

In 2020 the Art en Stock sale of low-priced artworks, held at the Abattoirs de Bomel in Namur, gave the proceeds of its fifth edition to the association.[2] Its board in Belgium then had seven volunteer members and was chaired by Sébastien Delforge, a staff member of the Haute École Albert Jacquard. Marie Gribomont, a French teacher at the school, was also on the board.[2]

On February 12, 2022, Sebastien Delforge and Pierre Demuelenaere were named liquidators of the association. The liquidation closed on October 1, 2022, and the association's only office closed the same day.[1]

Sponsorship

The association worked in three villages around Phnom Penh. Each sponsored child had one sponsor, or sometimes two. In 2020 the minimum sponsorship was 30 euros a month, the price of a 50-kilogram (110-pound) bag of rice.[2] In Cambodia the work was run day to day by three French-speaking Khmer staff members. Once a month they visited the villages to hand out the sponsorship support and to see how the children and their families were doing, and they reported serious problems, such as a child's hospital stay or death. Delforge traveled to Cambodia each year over the Christmas holidays, at his own expense, to work with the staff.[2]

As more of the sponsored children began college or university, the association set up a Higher Education Fund, paid for by outside donations. Most of the Art en Stock proceeds went to this fund. The rest paid for school supplies, which the association gave each year to every child at three schools, whether sponsored or not.[2]
